There is never a holiday harder to plan than a honeymoon so we thought we should seek advice from an expert! The Honeymoon Fixer specialises in putting together bespoke, once in a lifetime trips for couples and we asked them to list six of their favourite destinations.
Costa Rica – Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean, Costa Rica is an exotic mix of palm-fringed beaches, mist-shrouded rainforest, volcanoes and barbequed lobster! Famed for its rich biodiversity and wildlife it really is a perfect place to choose for a honeymoon!
You can completely lose yourself in Costa Rica’s stunning Pacific coastline which offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Central America. There you can snorkel, explore hidden beaches, take a whale watching tour or head off on horseback. Stay a few days in the midst of the tropical rainforest in one of the many national parks to really appreciate the wonderful flora and fauna. While you are there, if you are feeling adventurous you can jump on a zip wire that will fly you over the jungle canopy, or go white water-rafting down one of the rivers. Your honeymoon in this fantastic country will certainly be a once in a lifetime experience!
Iceland – Not the most obvious honeymoon destination, but for those couples looking for something a little offbeat and more adventurous this could be the answer! Dramatic black sandy beaches, amazing waterfalls, glaciers, hot springs and, if you are there between the end of September and April you will get to see the truly awe inspiring Northern Lights. There is also plenty of wildlife and birds to enjoy and the food is wonderful with lots of fresh seafood on offer.
The Maldives – A firm favourite for honeymooners! There is nowhere in the world quite like this magical country which is made up of over 1000 islands; some uninhabited and of varying sizes with gorgeous white pristine sandy beaches in the midst of wonderful turquoise sea. Most of the islands are accessible by boat or seaplane so you don’t have to be restricted to staying on just one. It offers some of the world’s best snorkelling and diving and you will find that many resorts run PADI courses. Windsurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking and waterskiing are just some of the other water sports that you can enjoy. However, if being active in the sea isn’t your thing there are plenty of excursions on offer including glass-bottomed boat trips, fishing, swimming with manta rays and dolphin watching .
Most of the resorts have spas with a strong emphasis on yoga and meditation, which will leave you feeling totally pampered and relaxed. The Maldives even lays claim to the world’s first underwater spa! There is a huge choice of places to stay that are all very spoiling and luxurious and you can be guaranteed to have a very romantic, once in a lifetime holiday.
Tuscany Italy is a country full of romance but Tuscany never fails to surprise and delight visitors. The countryside is beautiful with fields of sunflowers and poppies in the summer, lakes, hilltop villages and fabulous medieval cities – Florence, Siena and Pisa are Tuscany’s three most famous and most visited cities, world renowned for their artistic masterpieces. However, there are plenty of lesser known but equally beautiful cities worth visiting like Pienza, considered a jewel of the Renaissance and where the famous director, Franco Zeffirelli chose to film the most famous of all love stories, Romeo and Juliet!
You will be treated to plenty of delicious food made from seasonal, locally sourced produce. For wine lovers paying a visit to Chianti, Tuscany’s main wine producing region, is a real treat.
Another day that should be added to the excursion list is one spent at the thermal baths. Tuscany has the highest concentration of thermal centres in Italy so it won’t be difficult to find one! With so much on offer it is no surprise that this region is a very popular honeymoon destination.
Hvar – This Croatian island is incredibly picturesque and has recently been voted by European Best Destinations as the second best place to go on honeymoon. The island is shaped liked someone reclining on a sunlounger which is wholly appropriate as it is the sunniest place in the country and also has some the most luxurious beaches.
However, it isn’t just the beaches that are beautiful, the countryside is lovely too. Rolling hills full of lavender, olive groves and vineyards as well as lots of pretty, white washed towns to explore. Swimming in the crystal, clear sea is magical and there are plenty of beautiful beaches which are often deserted for honeymoon couples to discover. If you fancy a bit of an adventure hiring a boat to visit the The Plekeni Islands is highly recommended.
Morroco If you are wanting to honeymoon not too far from home but are looking for somewhere that offers a bit of excitement and something new then Morocco could well be the answer! The country is stunning and very varied. And, there is so much to do! Aside from enjoying the hustle and bustle of the cities you can relax by the sea, hike through the Atlas Mountains and trek across the sand dunes on camels.
Marrakech, is a good place to start your honeymoon. It is an exotic and fascinating city ranking next to London and Paris one of the top cities to visit. Easy to get lost in the myriad of tiny streets, markets and squares but with plenty of fabulous hotels and riads that provide an oasis of luxury, calm and relaxation. From there you can head south to Essaoulra for a bit of Moroccan style beach life. Not only can you enjoy great surfing but you can take the opportunity to ride camels across the beach. Essaoulra has a lovely chilled vibe and makes a nice contrast to city life.
Finish your honeymoon hiking in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in the Toubkal National Park before heading back to enjoy a final day or two Marrakech.
