Christina Robinson: Boost your business with Pinterest

When you think of Pinterest you might think of it as somewhere you go to get ideas to plan a wedding or decorate your house, however Pinterest isn’t only useful for planning events it is also a brilliant way of boosting your businesses.  Effectively used, it can drive people to your website and increase sales. As the owner of Green Umbrella Marketing, I use social media every day to help businesses grow so here are my top tips for using Pinterest for business.

Decide what sort of content you want to post

Before you get started, make sure you know your target audience and understand what type of content they want to see.  Consider what they will engage with; tips, infographics, blogs or, if you have an image friendly business, such as a product or a service like a beautician or hairdresser, perhaps that is what they’ll want to see.

Pinterest is no different to any other social media platform in that it is important not to sell on every pin, you must remember the social element.

What’s your aesthetic

You know what content you want to share, but with Pinterest it’s equally as important to know what you want your images to look like.  You need to make your images stand out amongst all the other images that your audience will be shown.  Whilst it might be easy to get carried away and try to create something loud to stand out (which is fine if that is your brand image) it’s important to stick to your brand guidelines.  This means that wherever people see your content, whether on your website, Facebook, blog, or Pinterest, it still reflects your business.

Optimise your pins

You might be thinking ‘what does optimising your pins mean?’  Put simply, an optimised pin tells the Pinterest algorithm everything it needs to know.  This includes:

  • A URL (could be a link to your blog or website)
  • Use of key words in titles and descriptions
  • Hashtags – they aren’t only for Instagram, use them
  • Include a call to action. What do you want people to do; visit your website, save the pin? Whatever it is, tell them.
  • Put a Pinterest widget on your website
  • Respond to comments
  • Follow popular boards
  • Create boards that fit with your keywords

Doing these things will make your pins and therefore your business more visible.

Think about categories

~Business Game Changer Special Promotion~

There are a number of categories on Pinterest that will help your pins be discovered.  Have a look through the categories available and see which ones relate to your business.  For example, if I’ve been looking at ideas to decorate my living room, most of the pins that will show up in my feed will be décor.

Make sure your pins are rich

Rich pins are particularly good if you have a product led business as they let you provide more information about an image.  This could include product details, price and other information that could help move people from pinner to purchaser.

Really interesting article. I’ve only ever used Pinterest to create boards for parties or home improvements etc, but this has inspired me to try and use it more for business.
