Ever wondered what a business coach does? Matt Catling explains

What exactly is a business coach? Well, in simple terms, a business coach is a mentor who helps you unlock your potential by showing you how to develop your mindset and overcome the challenges you face in your business. A business coach is a trusted adviser, counsellor and vision-holder who can help guide you on the road to success. This, however, does not mean only struggling business owners or startup companies can benefit from having a coach.

Take Erick Schmidt, for example. People know Erick as many things but most people know him from his time as the CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011. Google is one case of global success and it is safe to say that it is here to stay. Did this prestige and position in the industry stop Erick Schmidt from consulting his business coach as he lead one of the biggest tech companies in the world?

In Erick’s own words, he shared what it was like during his CEO stint at Google, “I had years of experience and was hired as the CEO, so I figured I knew what I was doing. Not only did Google make me realize I still had a lot to learn, but my coach, Bill Campbell, ended up being a tremendous teacher. In fact, one of my biggest self-critiques at the end of the year was not bringing Bill on even earlier to help me and my management team. Take it from me – everyone needs a coach. The sooner you find yourself one, the better off you’ll be.”

Who is a business coach?

A business coach is an objective third party who helps you solve problems, and grow or develop your business. The process involves asking questions, listening carefully and helping you discover solutions to run your business successfully.

How does it work?  The first step would be for a business coach to figure out your company’s objectives and goals. They will study every aspect of your company, and evaluate past experiences, strengths and weaknesses. Based on this information, business coaches are able to suggest specific strategies that will help you achieve your objectives. For struggling leaders, they will help with getting them unstuck and moving forward again with confidence.

Areas of Business Mentorship

Mentors can assist in the following areas:

Finances. Business coaches are usually not involved in taxes or bookkeeping. They, however, can help you solve cash-flow issues and uncover new revenue streams.

Marketing Planning. Business owners will often say they have a leads problem, when in reality, they have a fear of sales problem. A good business coach will use mindset strategies to help overcome issues such as fear of rejection that often stop a business owner from making sales calls.

General Planning. A mix of the first two, business coaches who are involved in general planning will work with the business owner on the mindset they need to accelerate their business to 6-figures and beyond.

What do I get out of working with a business coach?

A business coach will help shine a light on your blind spots and work on your mindset so you can build a bullet prrof psychology that will overcome any crisis.

And, as mentioned earlier, a business coach can help you get out of a rut and encourage growth!

The Perfect Business Coach Model

A good coach must have the following qualities:

  1. They hold onto your vision and hold you to account
  2. They have achieved what you want to achieve
  3. They have a network of professionals they can refer you to so you can take your business to the next level.

Conclusion

As you can see, a business coach is someone who will help you identify the strengths and weaknesses of both your business and your mindset so both can reach their full potential. A business coach can be particularly helpful when you are feeling uncertain, but want to take your business to the next level.

And no matter how much your business is thriving, you can still use the help of a mentor!
