A leader in Australia’s PR and communications industry, Joanne brings more than 30 years’ experience in journalism, public relations and strategic communications. Prior to founding Icon Agency with partner Chris Dodds, Joanne was an award-winning journalist and media commentator.

After starting her career with News Limited, Joanne spent eight years with Fairfax’s The Age, first as education reporter then as national industrial correspondent and senior business writer.

Her expertise is in issues and crisis management, brand reputation, corporate communications, brand communications and stakeholder engagement. At Icon, Joanne offers consult to government and corporate clients nationally, not to mention managing and inspiring over 40 Icon Agency staff across Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

Joanne is the Victorian Chairperson of the PRIA Registered Consultancies Group, a member of the Public Relations Institute of Australia and a member of the Australian Marketing Institute. In November 2016, Joanne was appointed a Fellow of the Public Relations Institute of Australia. She also recently secured Icon Agency’s membership with the prestigious Public Relations Organisation International (PROI), an international partnership of independent PR agencies.

A sought-after public speaker, panellist and facilitator, Joanne inspires the pursuit of possibility. She has hosted panels at the Australian Marketing Institute (2016), the PRIA National Conference (2019, 2015 and 2014) and the World PR Forum in Melbourne (2012). Joanne has taken her expertise internationally, delivering a keynote address at the PROI Asia-Pac conference in Queenstown NZ, and a keynote speech on digital disruption in PR to the Leaders in Communications Conference in Hong Kong, December 2016.

In her role as MD, Joanne leads Icon’s annual awards program which has seen the agency collect over 40 national and international awards since 2014, including back-to-back PRIA Golden Target Awards and a slew of marketing excellence awards.

Career highlights
• Heading the organising committee for the 2019 Public Relations Institute of Australia National Conference which brought together over 140 professionals from across Australia in one of the most successful events ever held by PRIA
• Winning a record three Public Affairs Asia 2016 Gold Standard Awards in Hong Kong. This achievement put Icon on the international map and saw the agency recognised among the top PR and communication firms both globally and in our region
• Winning the Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) contract to lead marketing and communications for the Australian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. This hugely prestigious, 2.5 year contract cemented Icon’s reputation as a top-tier agency and a serious competitor in the government sector.
