How to get the most out of Instagram for your business

There is so much conflicting information on the Internet about how to make the most of our Instagram for your business. I’m here to tell you the honest truth about what’s worked for growing my business accounts. Over my decade working in social media with some household names like ICONIC and NRL, I’ve gleaned some pertinent Instagram tips that will revolutionise the way you post on the platform.

Know your niche

If you scroll through my socials @emrosehills and @thesocialmediacoch you’ll be able to tell several things about me without even reading a single caption. I love dogs, flowers, the beach and social media tips. Once you look a little deeper, you’ll notice I consistently post social media tips on my business page. My goal is to provide business owners with practical informative tips that anyone can use. That’s my niche and I’m sticking to it. If I suddenly decided to branch off into real estate, I’m suddenly alienating my followers who joined me for my social media knowledge. Pick a niche and don’t stray too far from it.

Avoid using stock photos
Nothing beats photos of your face and your business. Stock photos look generic and they’re easy to spot from a mile off. All you need is a smartphone and good lighting. Be sure to highlight your services and products in the best light. If you don’t have any good photos, ask around and organise a photography/video shoot. You don’t have to look like a supermodel, you just have to be yourself.

Collaborate with others
A collaboration with other brands is a good way to grow your account and gain some traction. Find brands that align with your niche and run a giveaway. Perhaps you could live stream and interview someone inspirational and relevant, or use influencer marketing to grow awareness around your product or service. It’s important to note that if you are using influencers to promote your niche that you are aware of the advertising restrictions related to your industry. This is especially important if you are in the health and wellness industry.

Embrace your creative side
When you mimic everyone else in your industry, how are you going to stand out in a digitally saturated world? If I had a dollar for every time a real estate agent told me they wanted their Instagram feed to look like Kollosche, I would be able to afford a luxury home like the ones they sell. Their social media team post opulent properties, their feed is seamless and cohesive, but it’s NOT you. Don’t be afraid to be original and embrace creativity. I love how Dan Lee from Plum Property has gone out on a limb and now has a following 21.4K followers due to his original content.

Hire a social media coach
If you’re like a fish out of water when it comes to Instagram, it’s helpful to have a social media coach that you can turn to for advice, practical tips and vent to when content you thought was amazing falls flat. Often as a business owner, it’s easy to let posting to Instagram slide when you get busy. By investing in a mentor like myself, you’ll have someone who can help you plan a structured Instagram strategy, keep you accountable and provide ongoing support.
