With the year we’ve all had, it’s understandable you may have picked up a few less than perfect habits to get by.

During the pandemic, many of us have been working from home, distanced from friends, family and co-workers and frankly feeling frustrated at the limitations placed upon us. Some among us have also been more directly affected by Covid-19.

While living with the pandemic is the new normal, it’s important we don’t neglect our health – and that includes our physical and mental health of course.

A unique way of maintaining optimal health and fitness is via axe throwing! Have you heard of it? It’s a great way of relieving stress, getting in some much-needed escapism and fun. It’s about balance.

What is axe-throwing?

Urban axe throwing is a fun sport, where teams are taught by a dedicated coach to throw solid steel axes at wooden targets in a 2-hour session.

Axe throwing has long been a popular sport in Canada and the United States, and comes from the lumberjack history.

Why is it good for your health?

Axe-throwing works out several muscle groups in the body, from your core and shoulders, to the lats covering the middle of your back, pecs and legs.

It’s also an excellent stress-reliever, because it’s a social activity and fantastic fun – whether you hit the target or not!

Axe-throwing is also a really fun way of re-engaging team members working independently over the past year.

How do we know so much about axe-throwing?

While Covid-19 was picking up pace around the world in early 2020, we were launching the first axe-throwing meets corporate team building venue called Kiss My Axe, in Sydney, Australia.

As UK exports downunder, Jason and I were looking for a way to combine our expertise – from my years as a leader in the corporate world and his years in the entertainment business. We’re also both fans of action-packed sports.

When we began planning the venue over beers at the beach in 2019, we had no idea we’d be launching during a pandemic, but as Sydney restrictions have now eased for the time being, we can host events, and what we’re noticing most are the mental health impacts.

This includes our axe-throwing coaches who are out of work in other industries – from opera singing and acting, to nursing.

It also includes leaders who are giving teams the option to leave their living rooms and come to the Kiss My Axe team building venue.

There’s so much excitement to get together, share ideas and a laugh – and then let off some steam by throwing axes. We invite you to give axe-throwing go too.
