Tony Loughran on How to Manage Employees

By Tony Loughran, Director of ZeroRisk International

Twenty five years ago, I was head of BBC’s High Risk Department with a number of staff to manage and an even greater number of contractors to direct.

Over the past 20 years businesses have evolved, Covid has also accelerated change and some say for the better. Pre-Covid times, my experience with staff from other companies complained about over-reaching themselves, being a slave to the rhythm and burning out.

What I learnt back at the BBC, I’ve successfully applied to managing employees, as Director of an international company (ZeroRisk International). Staff have to be listened to and always included on your company’s journey to enable complete work fulfilment for them. As a boss, it is vitally important you make the time to listen to everyone’s views, no matter how busy you think you are. ZeroRisk has been successful in retaining staff and it’s not because of the amount you pay them. Staff are offered an identity and sense of belonging in something they can grow and flourish with.

Money is like drugs, it offers a short term hit with no long term gain, match this with all the above and you’ll find staff don’t really think about money but want what’s most important, which is their happiness and health and a great work life balance.
