Practical tips on hiring and working with freelancer

Have you noticed you have been doing all sorts of things for your business from creating your logo to running your own social media ads? If you have been doing it for a while but not getting the results you want, or you are feeling there are lots of outstanding tasks you cannot finish on your own, it’s probably the time to consider getting some help from a freelancer.

Where to look for a freelancer?

There are many options on the internet but the most popular ones are:

  • Fiverr
  • Upwork
  • Freelancer
  • AirTasker (if you are in Australia)

These platforms work in a very similar way. You post a job, you enter the information such as what the project is and what is your budget, then you would receive proposals from multiple freelancers. Alternatively, you are also able to browse freelancer profiles on these website, look at their reviews, portfolio and send them a message or invite them to your job.

How do I choose the best freelancer?

This is a question that gets asked a lot. To ensure you are hiring the best possible freelancer, you need to check out their reviews and projects they did in the past. Screen out the ones that you don’t like. Then it’s time to start having conversations with the ones you shortlisted. Try telling them what you are trying to achieve or the issues that you faced and see what they would recommend.

Should I go for the cheapest?

It is understandable that we want to get things done cheaper! Although the fee does reflect the quality somehow. Instead of using the price as the primary selecting criteria, you should put more focus on the work they have done and see and find the balance between getting a reasonable price and the quality.

How can I get the best result?

To do that, you need to make sure the freelancer knows what the best result or success looks like. If you are designing a logo or building a website, try to send them some websites you love as reference. If the work they send is not something you like, don’t give up. Whether you’re happy or unhappy, share your views with the freelancers, so they can either keep up the good work or try a different approach.
